A family run business who take great pride in their work. Their unit is spotlessly clean which is replicated by their attention to detail on every car they sell. My car was immaculate when I picked it up with a half tank of petrol to get me going and a lovely hamper bag unexpectedly provided by Edward’s wife (Justine). Edward & Oscar (his son) welcome you in to their family and are happy to answer any questions you have about their cars and won’t let the car leave until it is prepared to a very high standard. It’s unusual to find a company like this so if you’re thinking of buying from them please do not hesitate. I’m a retired Aerospace Engineer and pride myself on doing my homework before buying and highly recommend Adventure Motor Vehicles Ltd for a different and better buying experience.

I picked up my immaculately prepared Delica D5 today. The care and attention it has received are second to none. The passion from Edward and Oscar and the rest of the AMV team is evident in every detail. A lovely hamper was included too on collection. I have loved the process from start to finish and as I drove away from the workshop I knew I'd need to find an excuse to come back soon...and would be always welcome. Can't fault Adventure Motor Vehicles.

My venture into the world of D5’s started with a search for a compact camper van for our skiing/cycling activities. What rapidly became apparent was that full conversions in the main had little flexibility/space. Stumbling across a day van style converted D5 confirmed that such a vehicle was much more what we needed in terms of the vehicles rugged 4WD capabilities and style. Searching for suppliers, coming across and subsequently visiting D5 specialist AMV was a revelation in that they would do as much or as little, whenever, to the customers spec as required. The other revelation was how versatile the D5 truly is, it is highly space efficient but compact being no wider and only marginally longer than a medium SUV. On a test drive, with the CVT, adaptation was rapid. Ed did warn that it’s no sports car but the performance is adequate and with little roll plus the longer wheelbase has a comfortable, smooth ride. Usefully, the flappy paddle gearbox option available on most models prevents the D5 from bogging down on long drags. The elevated driving position and large glass area make driving a pleasure with convenient panoramic visibility underscored by the view through the huge sloping windscreen. As a postscript, overall fuel consumption is ~30mpg

Ed and Oscar are real enthusiasts, specializing primarily in D5’s (after the earlier Space Wagons) based on Japanese imports. Like many, we initially had concerns about import and went up a steep learning curve on the mechanics of that process but the team both here in the UK and their Japanese counterparts are experts in sourcing only suitable high spec vehicles and seamlessly dealing with the convoluted import process. All the typically 10+year old vehicles we have seen have been relatively low mileage, almost like new underneath thanks to the salt free environment they have been sourced from and gleam after the bodywork restoration.

AMV’s standard preparation includes conversion to UK spec, comprehensive mechanical service, restoration of the bodywork and full underbody protection to tackle the UK winters. Any customisation is carried out to the customers spec, be it refinishing the wheels, sourcing accessories or installing internal conversions, the latter being carried out by carefully selected local suppliers in full consultation with the customer. While not offering a formal warranty for AMV prepared vehicles, they state any issues occurring will be dealt with on a sympathetic basis. AMV are keen to provide ongoing servicing and maintenance of their vehicles in almost a partnership and despite a nationwide customer base, from discussion it seems that most customers do so.

AMV have been importing vehicles for a number of years and will source a particular spec to order with a lead time of ~3 months once a suitable vehicle has been sourced at auction in Japan. Being a new customer, both to AMV and the concept of Japanese imports, in the first instance we preferred to purchase an in-stock vehicle and were fortunate to secure the D5 that Ed and Oscar had personally inspected and won at auction during their first fact finding mission to Japan. The vehicle, a pearlescent white G Power model, took a couple of months to prepare including by default a full set of new tyres as the lightly worn originals were date stamped over 5 years old. The vehicles come with the regular MOT and V5 documentation. We did have a query over the class of vehicle and speed limits (as an MPV v. van v. car) as the V5 does not have the comprehensive data of a domestic market model. Having initially tried the DVSA without success, eventually our local police confirmed that as an MPV it is subject to the same limits as a car.

We have done ~4000 faultless miles in the year since its acquisition, during which we just removed both rows of rear seats to better accommodate bikes etc and provide an occasional basic sleeping area with no more formal conversion. True camping on wheels and not a tent in sight !

Periodic social visits to AMV and keeping an interested eye on the new imports via their website led inevitably to temptation when a stunning higher spec dark metallic blue model became available. With the benefit of experience and being more relaxed with the imported vehicle concept, a fatal

tentative telephone call later secured the vehicle subject to inspection which was followed by a visit in short order to confirm the sale and discuss customisation. In this case just refinish the after market wheels plus colour coordinate the bumpers and delivery was taken just three weeks later. The replacement higher spec vehicle is amazing, reinforcing our stance as exponents of the D5 and AMV as a supplier together with an elevated pride in ownership. Again, for the moment, we have simply removed some of the rear seats to increase the storage flexibility. As delivered the tyres fitted were almost new but relatively aggressive BF Goodrich T/A KO2’s and consequently quite noisy. We replaced these with less aggressive, quieter Bridgestone Duellers as fitted to our previous vehicle, the removed tyres were snapped up within 24 hours on ebay !

AMV do not provide a part exchange facility but with full knowledge of our vehicle, Ed offered to reprepare and market the vehicle on our behalf on a consignment basis. He was confident the vehicle would sell quickly and sure enough, within 6 weeks of handover, a customer was secured. Having lodged our white D5 with AMV when we took delivery of our new acquisition, the resale process was totally seamless from our point of view with just periodic updates culminating in a bank transfer.

Overall a very satisfying and seamless process, given the complications and potential pitfalls of importing vehicles …… oh, and speaking as a born and bred Yorkshireman, they serve proper Yorkshire tea (in Lancashire!).

"At the end of last year I was looking for a replacement for my VW California which I loved but was beginning to show its age. The replacement needed to be no bigger, have similar levels of quality, better petrol engine reliability and be more useable as a day van with 4wd capability to transport bikes, dogs and general 'life stuff'.

There are so many options available but quite quickly I was able to narrow my choice down to a Delica D5 and a phone call with Edward at AMV confirmed it was likely to be a good choice. Seeing his vehicles in the flesh, the quality of the base vehicle and the preparation his team puts them through is very impressive. What is equally impressive is the way he and his extended team rose to the challenge of building an interior layout bespoke to my needs and to a type that they hadn't done before. I have ended up with a hugely flexible day van, camper van, all terrain van, stuff mover with immaculate undersides and paintwork with what I hope will be bullet proof mechanicals. Something I can enjoy with little worries for years to come.

"In 2021 I was looking for a 4WD vehicle that would accommodate at least 5 passengers and be flexible enough to permit me to occasionally sleep comfortably in the vehicle. After doing my research I had decided that a Mitsubishi Delica might meet my needs and I visited a couple of dealers close to home in the South. "Well, where do we start…

·        Having purchased our vehicle prior to this Lockdown, my wife and I collected our Toyota Noah on the 1st of Feb in a COVID safe collection. Bearing in mind this vehicle is 18 yrs old, it was absolutely gleaming.

·        Not only gleaming on the surface, but gleaming underneath. We had seen a video of the chassis during its finishing touches (chassis waxed and treated) and all ready to be let loose on the UK highways 😳

·        To say Edward is an enthusiast in his work is an understatement. Get him talking about cars, vans classics, you would think you’ve known him for years. Great thanks go to Edward and Justine for this superb gem of a business tucked away in North Lancashire.

·        Originally my wife and I needed a van for work (gardening), at least a 5 seater and a vehicle for camping and mountain biking. Not only did we end up with a 5 seater but an 8 seater as well, the Noah does both and is a great all rounder.

·        The long research started about 18 months before hand, until AMV popped up.

·        The always so cheerful Chap at the end of the phone, Edward says “I have a Toyota Noah”.
My reply,” Never heard of it”.
